Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has expressed grave concern over the recent invitation of Nigeria Labour Congress President Joe Ajaero by the Nigeria Police Force.
In a statement on Thursday, Obi emphasized the sensitivity of the situation, given Ajaero’s critical role as leader of the nation’s workforce.
Obi cautioned that due process must be observed, stressing that the allegations against Ajaero are serious but unclear whether they relate to personal conduct or his responsibilities as NLC leader.
He urged extreme caution, warning against autocratic methods to silence labour, and called on authorities to adhere strictly to the rule of law and evidence-based procedures.

“Labour should stick to its strengths and powers to maintain democratic order and sanity,” Obi stated, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law in handling the matter.
“Extreme caution must thus be exercised in the manner in which this issue is handled. It is not unexpected that government will try autocratic methods to view labour as a potential opposition force.”
The former governor further called on the authorities to adhere strictly to the rule of law and evidence-based procedures in handling the matter.
“Invitations like the one to Ajaero are expected. But the rule of law and the laws of evidence should be observed. Labour should stick to its strengths and powers in order to maintain democratic order and sanity,” Obi said.
The invitation has generated anxiety, and Obi’s intervention highlights the need for careful handling to avoid escalating tensions between labour and government.
