The Julius Abure-led branch of the Labour Party (LP) has given its presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, 48 hours to quit from the party after aligning with a newly formed opposition alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
It was previously reported that Obi was among the top political players who met on Wednesday to form the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the coalition party to depose President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.
However, in a statement signed and issued on Thursday in Abuja, the Abure-led faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, warned that Obi’s support for the coalition contradicts the faction’s position, which has distanced itself from the alliance, describing its members as “power mongers” and “frustrated politicians.”

“The Labour Party has consistently stated that it is not part of the coalition,” the statement continued.

“Therefore, any of our members who is part of the coalition is given within 48 hours to formally resign his membership of the party.”

“Desperate Politicians Can’t Birth a New Nigeria” – Ifoh Ifoh criticized the coalition, stating that the “new Nigeria” motto was a farce given the people behind it.

“We are aware of several nocturnal meetings between Peter Obi and some of our members, lobbying them to join him in his new party,” the accuser claimed.

“We are also aware that a number of them have refused to defect with him.”

The LP chieftain claimed that the coalition includes persons responsible for Nigeria’s previous misgovernance, accusing them of utilizing the platform to “relaunch themselves into the circle of power.”

“Nearly 70 per cent of the Nigerian population is youths who are tired of the old order,” he told me.

“The new Nigeria that the youths are dreaming of is not what can be realised from what we are seeing in the coalition.”

‘One leg in, one leg out’ Politics will not be tolerated.
The Labour Party stated that it will no longer allow divided loyalties, emphasizing that members cannot subscribe to two political platforms at the same time.

“Labour Party is not available for people with dual agenda, people with deceptive persona,” Ifoh told me.

“In the morning they claim to be in the Labour Party, and in the evening they are in coalition.”

He asked all party members to stay loyal to the structure and prepare for future elections under the Labour Party banner.

Meanwhile, Peter Obi has reaffirmed his commitment to the opposition party alliance, characterizing it as a critical platform for Nigeria’s rescue in 2027.

In a post on his official 𝕏 Twitter, the former Anambra State Governor stated, “No one group can change Nigeria alone.” To remove the mechanisms that keep our people impoverished and insecure, we must build bridges rather than walls—even if those bridges are unsettling.”

He added that the alliance has legally accepted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform for the 2027 elections, with Senator David Mark serving as National Chairman and Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as Secretary.

Obi said further: “Our commitment is to sacrifice and work together… ensuring Nigeria gets a competent, capable, and compassionate leadership that will prioritise the nation’s future by putting the welfare of Nigerians first.”
