Comrade Segun Oluwasanmi, a former employee of Alpha-Beta Consulting Limited, was arrested by the Nigeria Police Force after he accused the company of corruption and tax evasion.
Oluwasanmi was arrested on Wednesday at the State Intelligence Department (SID) Command Headquarters in Ikeja, Lagos, according to a family member who spoke to SaharaReporters on Thursday.
The SID command headquarters in Ikeja seized Comr. Segun Oluwasanmi yesterday, January 14, 25. He will be arraigned in court today (15/01/26), according to the IPO, but the court has not yet been revealed, the relative stated.
The family member further mentioned that just prior to his imprisonment, Oluwasanmi was given a brief opportunity to speak with his family and legal representatives.
The insider stated, “When they decided to detain him a few minutes before 7 p.m. yesterday, he was just asked to call his family and lawyer.”
The family claims that authorities told them that Alpha-Beta Consulting was the target of a cyberbullying accusation.
They said that he had committed cyberbullying against Alpha-Beta. The cousin continued, “We knew he was arrested for exposing the corruption in the company.”
Alpha-Beta Consulting, a private company hired by the Lagos State Government to collect taxes and income, was the target of numerous petitions and public accusations prior to Oluwasanmi’s arrest.
According to reports, the petitions were filed with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC). Copies were also sent to the Federal and Lagos State Ministries of Finance via the Committee for the Defense of Human Rights (CDHR).
Oluwasanmi claimed in his petition that Alpha-Beta Consulting engaged in systematic tax avoidance by dividing employee compensation in order to lower tax obligations.
“What Alpha-Beta has been doing is this: they divided our salary into two so that they will not pay tax on everything,” he claimed.
“You will see half of my income in the payroll, particularly through 2022. Only a portion of our salaries were being taxed, and even then, they were underpaying.
He clarified that taxes were computed on a lower base and purportedly under-remitted since payroll only reflected a portion of employees’ salaries.
“You are paying taxes on the two portions of your salary. On one portion, you are paying taxes. He added, “You are still underpaying on the portion you are paying tax on.”
A purported internal memo confirms under-remittance
In his appeal, Oluwasanmi included internal corporate communication, such as a document dated April 30, 2024, signed by Anjolaoluwa Grace Ige, Head of Human Capital Management, which purportedly stated that the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) had discovered under-remittance of tax.
Oluwasanmi claimed in previous interviews that he was harassed and victimized by the company when he started uncovering fraud.
He claimed, “I was exposing fraud when I joined.”
He accused inflated contracts and preferential treatment in a number of ministries, including procurement.
He had almost six million in inflated contracts under his supervision in just six months. I conducted the research. Regarding a procurement manager, he remarked, “I have the reports.”
He also mentioned supply-side price inflation. “For example, a carton of printing paper was sold for ₦5,900,” he stated. They paid ₦9,600 for it. One carton costs an additional ₦3,700.
Oluwasanmi claimed that he first received praise for his disclosures.
“In 2019, I won ₦1,000,000. He said, “He told everyone that he liked what I was doing,” and said that he was rewarded for exposing overpayments for cloud services.
But he claimed that once he accused the Chief Technology Officer of faking his signature, his relationship with the corporation soured.
“I resigned on November 6 after they responded and asked me to report to Olumide, the CTO, who falsified my signature,” he said.
“He admitted to copying my signature there, but despite my follow-ups, the report was never made public.”
