Mr. Edwin Anikwenu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), and at least 13 attorneys from the Nigerian Bar Association’s (NBA) Garki Branch stormed a Federal Capital Territory High Court in Apo to defend Human Rights attorney Barrister Victor Giwa against a forgery allegation.
Giwa was charged by the police with faking Awa Kalu, SAN’s letterhead.
The SAN asked the court to grant the second respondent bail on self-recognizance or, alternatively, release him to any executive member of the NBA Garki chapter while debating Giwa’s bail plea.
He claims that the application’s reasons are contained in the motion’s body and are backed up by an affidavit that was provided by Abu Gabriel.
We have submitted a written address together with the bail request in accordance with the court’s guidelines. In addition to not evading bail, he will not obstruct the already-completed investigation. He urged, “We implore the court to grant him bail.”
Mr. Eristo ASAP, the prosecutor, raised objections to the bail request.
He claims that granting him bail could endanger the court case.
In his decision, Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie gave him the amount of bond. of N30 million, accompanied by two sureties who must be at least as qualified as a director with a full identity court
Additionally, he requested that Giwa submit his travel document with the court’s registrat.
The police have nevertheless filed charges against Giwa in spite of Prof. Awa Kalu’s letter to the Inspector-General of Police officially removing him from the claim that he committed forgery and impersonation.
According to reports, the court ordered the police to hold human rights attorney Victor Giwa for around three weeks without granting him bail.
In a letter to Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector-General of Police, the SAN stated that his letterhead was never fake and that he had never reported the forging of his document to the police.
In a letter to the Inspector General of Police dated May 30, 2025, Professor Kalu said that he had not reported or lodged a complaint against Mr. Giwa for allegedly faking the letterhead of his company.
The letter responds to police-initiated Charge No. CR/150/25, where Giwa is charged with forging the official letterhead of “Awa U. Kalu (SAN) and Partners” (formerly “Awa U. Kalu (SAN) and Associates”) in order to correspond with the Federation’s attorney general.
“I want to let you know that there is a lot of news on the internet that the aforementioned gentleman is being charged with forging my official headed paper,” Prof. Kalu wrote.
“Please take note that I have not reported anything or filed a complaint at any Nigerian police station claiming that Mr. Victor Giwa falsified my official official document.”
Prof. Kalu’s explanation seriously weakens the basis of the forgery accusation, which allegedly rests on the unauthorized use of his company’s name and letterhead.
According to his statement, the major party whose identity was allegedly exploited did not formally accuse anyone.
Additionally, on May 23, 2025, Victor Giwa wrote to Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police, requesting that the IGP look into the claim of cash inducement before charging him.
In particular, Giwa summoned Mr. Egbetokun to look into allegations of frivolous xharge made against him and another person against the Nigeria Police Commissioner of Police, legal services, Chiozoba Oyakhire Ehiede, and Ms. Asabe Waziri.
He urged the IGP to look into the relationship between Asabe Waziri, a Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited employee, and the CP, Legal Services of the Nigeria Police.
