The Abia State Police Command, under CP Danladi Isa, has announced that its operatives successfully raided a criminal hideout at Ikot Ukpon village, Obot Akara LGA, Akwa Ibom State, and neutralised six suspected kidnappers.

The police command stated that it traced the suspects’ den to Ikot Ukpon village and that its personnel acted on credible intelligence.

A statement by DSP Maureen Chinaka, the spokesperson of the Abia State Police Command, on Friday said that the operatives were exiting the camp after the successful operation when they were ambushed by other members of the gang, who attempted to rescue their partners in crime, resulting in a gun battle with the police.

It added that six of the arrested suspects, while attempting to escape, sustained gunshot injuries and died en route to the hospital for medical attention.

“Other members of the gang fled with bullet wounds. Meanwhile, two police officers sustained gunshot injuries and are currently receiving medical attention,” DSP Chinaka said in the statement.

The Abia Police Command, which said it is still combing the area, noted that it is partnering with the Akwa Ibom Police Command to apprehend other fleeing members of the gang.

It listed some of the items recovered from the suspects, including two AK-47 rifles, 57 rounds of ammunition, one locally-made pistol, six magazines, and a large bag containing suspected charms.

The Abia Police Command recalled that the Director of Sobaz Oil and Gas was kidnapped on March 4, 2025, along Azumini Road in Ukwa West LGA of Abia State, an incident that led to the deaths of ASP Tanko Naptip of Rivers Command and Anayo Ukwu.

The Managing Director of Dozzman Filling Station, Mr Chiedozie Confidence Chijioke, was also killed by the suspected gang, prompting the Abia Police to investigate and track down the perpetrators.
