In a heartfelt ceremony held in Abuja, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, presented cheques totalling N5.754 billion to the families of deceased police officers who lost their lives in service to the nation.
This latest disbursement brings the total benefits paid to police families between 2023 and 2024 to an impressive N15.606 billion, benefiting 5,225 family members and next of kin.
Egbetokun emphasized the significance of this gesture, stating, “We have presented cheques amounting to N15,606,138,376 to 5,225 family members and next of kin of deceased officers.”
He noted that prior to this event, cheques totalling N9.851 billion had been presented to 3,077 families and next of kin across six separate ceremonies between July 2023 and June 2024.
The latest disbursement covers balance payments for insurance policies spanning 2018-2019, 2021-2022, 2022-2023, and 2023-2024. Egbetokun acknowledged the gravity of the sacrifice made by the fallen officers, saying, “While we know we cannot fill the void left by the loss of your loved ones, we hope that these cheques will provide some support as you face the challenges ahead.”

Commitment to Police Welfare
Egbetokun reaffirmed the force’s dedication to prioritizing the welfare of police personnel. “As we honour our fallen heroes, we also renew our commitment to the safety and well-being of the officers who continue to serve,” he stated.
The Inspector General commended the force insurance unit for their tireless efforts in ensuring prompt settlement of claims despite the challenges faced.
This substantial benefit payment demonstrates the police force’s commitment to supporting the families of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. As the police force continues to prioritize the welfare of its personnel, it serves as a beacon of hope for those who serve and protect the nation.
Previous reports indicate that the Inspector General has consistently demonstrated his commitment to police welfare, having presented N1.6 billion to 727 families of deceased police officers in March 2024.
Today’s disbursement marks the largest in the history of cheque presentations to family members of deceased police officers, reflecting the force’s unwavering dedication to easing the burden on the families of fallen colleagues.
