According to people close to Government House, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara is expected to announce his switch from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The political action follows the recent resolution of Fubara’s long-running and acrimonious conflict with Nyesom Wike, his predecessor and political godfather, who is currently the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The pro-Wike members of the Rivers State House of Assembly attempted to impeach Governor Fubara as the political crisis, which started towards the end of 2023, quickly intensified. In October 2023, at the height of the crisis, a portion of the State House of Assembly complex was set on fire.
The Federal Government’s participation was ultimately required due to the conflict. President Bola Tinubu imposed a State of Emergency in Rivers in March 2025, which led to the initial six-month suspension of Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the House of Assembly.
Until the ban was lifted in September 2025, Ibok Ekwe Ibas, a former Chief of Naval Staff, was the only administrator in charge of the state.
The Whistler reports that sources speculate that Fubara’s impending defection could be seen as an attempt to align himself with the federal power structure and seek political refuge, especially since the power struggle may have severely damaged his political base within the PDP.
Former Rivers State Accountant General Fubara won the PDP governorship primary in May 2022 with the support of then-Governor Wike. He went on to defeat Tonye Cole, the APC candidate, by a margin of more than 300,000 votes in the March 2023 governorship election.
According to reports, Fubara met with President Tinubu behind closed doors at the Presidential Villa on Monday evening.
