According to Abubakar Kyari, minister of agriculture and food security, Nigeria loses $10 billion a year due to post-harvest losses caused by inadequate storage and flooding.
In Kangire neighborhood, Kyari gave a speech on Monday at the opening of the Green Legacy Rural neighborhood Agriculture and Infrastructure Network (G.R.A.I.N) pulse center.
The loss is also caused by poor infrastructure, insufficient processing, soil degradation, climate change, and unpredictable rainfall, according to the ministry.
70% of the nation’s food is produced by smallholder farmers, hence Kyari claims that empowering them will strengthen the economy.
With smallholder farmers producing the majority of the country’s food, he pointed out that agriculture accounts for over 24% of Nigeria’s GDP.
“We can unleash the full potential of our land and people by providing smallholder farmers with access to markets, modern tools, and technology,” Kyari stated.
Initiatives spearheaded by the private sector will fortify Nigeria’s food systems and increase their resistance to post-harvest losses, the minister emphasized.
The pulse center will serve as an integrated center for rural development, infrastructure, and agriculture, encompassing the whole agricultural value chain, he said.
President Bola Tinubu’s administration is prioritizing agriculture as the backbone of the country’s change, Kyari said, with real-world initiatives supporting its ambition.
Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar also spoke, highlighting the value of public-private partnerships in development and applauding the creation of these hubs in Jigawa’s rural areas.
According to Tuggar, “Nigeria will benefit from this microeconomy due to its many advantages, especially the integration of modern facilities and technologies.”

Tinubu and Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi were praised by Tuggar for making food security a top priority in their development plan.
Namadi also praised the Jigawa pulse center, stating that it will strengthen Kangire’s economy and show how agriculture-led development can alter rural areas.
A solar-powered system and digitally connected hubs that support the entire agricultural value chain are among the center’s salient characteristics, he said.
The governor declared that in order to improve livelihoods, build infrastructure, and generate jobs, his administration will keep agriculture as a top priority.
A supporter of Tinubu’s renewed hope program, Muhammad Uba, the chairman of the Birnin-Kudu local government area (LGA), where the center is located, praised Namadi’s efforts to modernize Jigawa agriculture.
