Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Advisor on Information and Strategy, has criticized those who have voiced concerns about the tax rules.
In an interview with Punch, he denied requests for the postponement, stating that the law will go into effect on January 1, 2026, and was “unstoppable.”
Onanuga dismissed calls for suspension as being at odds with “right-thinking Nigerians” and called the measures “revolutionary,” claiming that the new system would increase tax collection for the benefit of Nigerians.
He declared, “The National Assembly has passed the legislation.” The President is in favor of it. Additionally, some people should have voiced their complaints long ago, but they are only now waking up.
“There is no stopping the law. By the grace of God, the implementation will start on January 1, 2026. Additionally, there is nothing to be afraid about. In addition to exempting low-income workers from taxation, this move will harmonize the majority of our various taxes.
But according to some, it ought to be put into practice? It’s evident that they disagree with Nigerians who hold conservative views.
“All Nigerians will benefit from this revolutionary law, which will increase our tax revenue.” When they say that we shouldn’t implement, it’s too late to object. As it is now, the law cannot be stopped.
“Anyway, it is already being put into practice.”
Four key tax reform legislation were recently signed into law by President Tinubu. According to the administration, this is the biggest overhaul of Nigeria’s tax system in decades.
The Nigeria Revenue Service is the sole authority that oversees the Nigeria Tax Act, Nigeria Tax Administration Act, Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act, and Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Act.
After a six-month transition period for system alignment and public education, the laws are set to go into force on January 1, 2026.
