Nigerians have disagreed with claims by Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, on power supply in the country.
The minister had in a statement on Sunday said 40 percent of electricity consumers in Nigeria are now enjoying 20 hours of uninterrupted power supply
He attributed the improvement in power supply to the government’s efforts, saying Nigeria’s electricity generation has reached 5,500 megawatts in the last few weeks.
Adelabu said: “The major achievement is the fact that today we generate over 5,500 megawatts of power, we transmit and distribute it, and over 40 percent of customers today enjoy over 20 hours of regular power supply across the nation.
“You can see that there is a significant improvement between when we came in and now, which we intend to improve further.
“The electricity that we enjoy today is not by accident. It’s because of all these transformers and mobile substations that we commissioned and installed.
However, the minister’s claims have not gone down well with many electricity consumers who complained about adequate power supply in some states across the country.
A popular journalist and government critic, Rufai Oseni, fired the first on his X handle on Monday.
He wrote: “Also according to NBS, electricity customers in Nigeria are over 11m, So how can 40% of Nigerians have stable electric power when about 73% of the population barely have grid power? In Odogbolu alone, they just restored their power after many months, So where did the minister get his data from?”

Other consumers then followed suit.
“Very inconsiderate people, something happened in my estate about 2 months ago, some miscreants came and vandalised our transformer, JED told us we either contribute money for repairs or wait till they have our time, u know that means, we decided to contribute money, every household was levied 10k and before you know millions were gathered for repairs.
“Why these long backgrounds, it shows the amount of money this JED and others generate every month yet they can’t give light, it’s saddening,” another user wrote.

Even the Osun state where the minister came from doesn’t enjoy 20 hours of electricity supply, the same Ejigbo local government in Osun state, hardly enjoys 1-2 hours of light daily, if rain fall, it takes them about a week before it’s lights. Uncle Bayo Adelabu too dey lie.
