At the Presidential Villa in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu is currently meeting with Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas, who was recently appointed as Rivers State’s only administrator.
In the midst of a political crisis involving former Governor Nyesom Wike and State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, which coincided with the meeting, which took place at 12:50 pm.
During his nationwide speech on Tuesday, President Tinubu announced that Ibas will be the administrator in charge of Rivers State after Governor Siminalayi Fubara was suspended for a six-month first term.
The constitutional actions taken to resolve the political unrest in the state included the suspension of Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and every member of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
“In the interim, I hereby designate Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd) as Administrator to oversee the state’s affairs in the best interests of the good people of Rivers State,” Tinubu said in his announcement. To be clear, the judicial branch of Rivers State will continue to operate in line with its constitutional duty, hence this pronouncement has no bearing on it.

“No new legislation will be enacted by the Administrator. He may, however, create rules as needed to carry out his duties, but they must be reviewed, accepted, and issued by the Federal Executive Council before the state president can sign them into law.
