Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defense, has accused his detractors of trying to use delicate security matters as a propaganda tool.
In a statement signed by Ibrahim Dosara, his media assistant, the Minister bemoaned the fact that he is the target of deliberate and politically motivated attacks meant to harm his reputation.
He claimed that the persons funding the attacks are those whose political aspirations for 2027 are in jeopardy due to the security changes implemented by the government.
He claimed that the perpetrators of the attacks are politicians looking for attention and attempting to divert him from his work.
“Courage, consistency, and a commitment to truth are necessary for public service,” he said.
“Any attempt to link my name to irrelevant incidents is nothing more than desperate political propaganda.”
Long before he was appointed governor of Zamfara, Matawalle clarified, banditry was already a serious problem.
He declared, “Banditry was not an issue that emerged during my tenure. Over several years, it had grown.
He claimed that his administration had pursued criminals, created high-level committees, improved intelligence, and implemented structured security measures.
He added that disarmament programs were carried out with military assistance and that compromised traditional rulers were eliminated.
During his tenure as governor, the minister reported that 11 Chinese nationals engaged in illicit mining were deported and thousands of kidnapped victims were saved. He claimed that anyone attempting to falsify this record is using the suffering of innocent people as a political tool.
Matawalle added that these steps had prevented significant security problems in Zamfara for more than a year.
“I received harassment and intimidation,” he continued, describing the harassment he endured while assisting in the rescue of schoolgirls who had been abducted. However, I refused to give in to coercion. Humanity is prioritized.
He maintained that those who are criticizing him are driven by the 2027 political contest and are terrified of the current defense changes.
“My loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains total,” he declared, reiterating his commitment to the president. Propaganda won’t be able to sway his judgment.
