Aggrieved Nigerians on Monday, took to the streets of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in protest against the lingering fuel scarcity in the country.

The demonstrators who displayed various placards, also demanded the immediate sacking of the Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, over the fuel scarcity bedevilling the country.

Some of the inscriptions on the placards read:

“We are tired of hearing stories about our refineries”, No direction, Kyari is just drifting with the wind”, “We want accountability in the affairs of NNPCL”.

The protest was an immediate response to the NNPCL’s admission that the fuel scarcity was as a result of a substantial debt owed to suppliers, after initially denying that it was owing the suppliers.

According to organizers of the protest, the Coalition of Concerned Civil Society Organizations of Nigeria (CCCSON), the demonstration was to create awareness and push the President Bola Tinubu administration to act fast to arrest the scarcity of fuel in the country and alleviate the sufferings of Nigerians.

Convener of the group, Comrade Aminu Abbas, who spoke at a rally held at the Abuja Unity Fountain, blamed Kyari for the unfortunate development.

“Why do we, the people, have to endure endless queues, inflated prices, and the daily uncertainty of whether we can fuel our vehicles or power our homes? The answer lies in the gross incompetence and mismanagement,” Abbas said.

“We ask: what has Kyari done to alleviate this crisis? Where are the solutions? Why are our refineries, which should be the backbone of our fuel supply, still in disrepair?

“We are at a critical juncture in our nation’s history. President Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda promises a new beginning for our country, a path to prosperity and security for all Nigerians.”
