The 2027 General Election schedule has been updated by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), moving the National Assembly and presidential elections ahead.
Elections for the National Assembly and President will take place on Saturday, January 16, 2027, according to the new schedule.
Elections for the State Houses of Assembly and the governorship will take place on Saturday, February 6, 2027.
INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan signed the updated schedule, which was released in Abuja on Thursday.
In the past, INEC scheduled state elections on March 6, 2027, and national elections for February 20, 2027.
In accordance with the Electoral Act of 2022, the earlier dates were announced in February.
The change came after the Electoral Act of 2022 was repealed and the Electoral Act of 2026 was passed, according to Malam Mohammed Haruna.
Key statutory timelines were changed under the new law, according to Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information Committee.
In order to guarantee complete adherence to the new legal framework, he said INEC examined and restructured its operations.
The Commission has decided that the presidential and national assembly elections will henceforth take place on Saturday, January 16, 2027.
He declared that Saturday, February 6, 2027, would now be the date of the elections for the governorship and state houses of assembly.
Party primaries, including dispute resolution, would start on April 23 and extend until May 30, 2026, according to Haruna.
According to him, party membership registrations will be submitted between April 1 and April 21, 2026.
Candidates for the National Assembly and presidency may submit their nomination forms between June 27 and July 11, 2026.
Nomination forms for the State Assembly and governorship will be accepted from July 18 to August 8, 2026.
On August 1, 2026, INEC will release the nominated national candidates’ details.
The state candidates’ details will be released on August 29, 2026.
August 22, 2026, is the deadline for national candidates to withdraw or be replaced.
The withdrawal date is September 19, 2026, for elections to the State Assembly and governorship.
On September 12, 2026, the final list of national candidates will be made public.
On October 10, 2026, the state candidates’ final list will be made public.
“The National Assembly and Presidential campaigns will start on August 19, 2026.
“On September 9, 2026, the campaigns for the State Houses of Assembly and the Governorship will begin.
He declared, “Campaigns will conclude 24 hours prior to election day, as stipulated by law.”
Haruna warned that INEC would enforce compliance and asked political parties to follow the schedule to the letter.
He stated that INEC’s official website and other communication channels had the updated schedule.
INEC also moved the August 8, 2026, Osun Governorship Election to August 15, 2026.
The commission observes that certain preparations have already been made for the Ekiti and Osun Governorship Elections.
Haruna stated that the remaining actions would now be carried out strictly in compliance with the Electoral Act of 2026.
The updated dates, he added, were in line with the 1999 Constitution as amended.
According to Haruna, everyone must share responsibility for the elections’ successful conduct.
In order to ensure inclusive, credible, and peaceful elections that represent the people of Nigeria’s sovereign will, he urged all parties involved to work together.
