The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has grounded a Rano Air aircraft with registration number 5N-BZY after an engine issue during a flight from Abuja to Katsina.
According to Daily Trust, sources in the aviation industry revealed that the aircraft had a problem in engine 1 while airborne, causing the flight crew to immediately deploy emergency procedures.
The event caused a disruption in Rano Air’s operations. Travelers due to fly from Sokoto to other locations were stranded after the Sokoto leg of the trip was cancelled.
“The oxygen masks were immediately triggered, and the pilots adhered to all emergency procedures. Fortunately, the smoke cleared before landing, and the airplane landed safely with no further issue,” an aviation official informed reporters.
It is understood that a rescue aircraft was quickly dispatched to transport the Abuja-Katsina passengers, but the operational hitch disrupted future flight schedules.

The aircraft was grounded for investigation.
According to a preliminary assessment provided by the NCAA, its Directorate of Airworthiness instructed that the involved aircraft be grounded awaiting a comprehensive investigation.
“Engineers are currently examining the aircraft on the ground to determine the root cause of the engine issue and smoke,” according to the report.
The NCAA reaffirmed its commitment to safety, saying it would never compromise on established aviation regulations, even if it caused temporary disruptions to aircraft operations.
“Nigeria’s aviation safety record remains solid despite the peculiar challenges of operating in a developing environment,” the regulator stated.
It emphasized that, in comparison to countries with more advanced infrastructure, Nigeria experiences less serious events due to its cautious approach. “Here, flights are cancelled at the slightest sign of a safety concern,” according to the NCAA.
The regulatory authority claimed that the grounding of Rano Air’s aircraft is consistent with international best practices and global safety monitoring criteria.
“We are committed to keeping Nigerian airspace safe and will continue to uphold all necessary checks,” the regulator said.
Affected passengers are likely to be accommodated in accordance with Rano Air’s obligations under Nigerian consumer protection laws.
NCAA has guaranteed the public that it would publish a full report once the ongoing safety investigation of aircraft 5N-BZY is completed.
