In response to allegations of the indiscriminate dismissal of vice-chancellors, Education Minister Morufu Alausa has been called before the House of Representatives Committee on University Education.
Alausa was also accused by the committee of being involved in the dissolution of university governing bodies. Abubakar Fulata (APC-Jigawa), the chairman of the committee, said this at a meeting in Abuja.
Due to the petitions the committee has recently received against the minister, Fulata stated that the minister’s appearance was imperative.
Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, the University of Nigeria in Nsukka, and Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education in Owerri were among the universities impacted, he said.
According to reports, the congressman stated that the education sector is currently troubled by unstable leadership as a result of unilateral actions to dissolve governing councils and remove substantive vice-chancellors.
Among other matters, he emphasized the cases of designating acting vice-chancellors.
Such uncertainties pose a serious threat to the industry, Fulata said, because they could lead to needless conflict among university authorities.
He cautioned that this might endanger the stability and tenure of the educational system and result in the abuse of pertinent rules and regulations.

The expulsion of Aisha Maikudi from her position as Vice-Chancellor and the dissolution of the council on February 6, 2025, were unexpected for the concerned University of Abuja staff, according to Abubakar Kari, a spokesperson of the group.
In response to a petition entitled “Unwarranted Removal of Prof. Aisha Maikudi as Vice-Chancellor and Dissolution of Governing Council of University of Abuja,” Kari denounced the state of affairs.
According to him, Patricia Lar was named acting vice-chancellor, Senator Lanre Tejuoso was nominated to the governing council, and Air Vice Marshal Ismaila Kaita (retd) was also relieved of his responsibilities as council chairman.
Kari claims that the Universities Miscellaneous Provisions Amendment Act n2003, which clearly specifies the steps for dismissing a vice-chancellor, was violated by these activities.
He explained that a university’s governing board is the only body with the power to fire a vice-chancellor.
He called on the lawmakers to intervene and restore Ms. Maikudi to her post immediately. He also urged them to ensure that council members serve out their tenure as elected representatives of the University Senate and congregation.
In their separate comments, Ms. Maikudi and Mr. Kaita told the committee that they had not yet received any communication about their termination.
