The 20 medical students who were freed after nine days in captivity met with Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Sunday evening.
The students, from the Universities of Jos and Maiduguri, were abducted in Benue State while traveling to Enugu for a conference. They arrived at the Force Headquarters at approximately 5:35 p.m. on Sunday, accompanied by their Vice-Chancellors.
The meeting had the IGP, the Vice-Chancellors, as well as Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory, Benneth Igweh, and his counterpart from Benue State in attendance.

The abduction had sparked widespread concern, prompting a significant response from law enforcement. The IGP ordered the deployment of tactical resources, including helicopters, drones, and specialized vehicles, to expedite the students’ rescue. Additional detectives were also dispatched to Benue State to assist in the operation.
In a statement confirming the students’ release on Saturday, Force spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi stated that no ransom was paid for their freedom, highlighting that the rescue operation was conducted with tactical precision and professionalism.
