Nigerians are patiently waiting for the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Chris Musa to fulfill his promise of hunting down notorious bandit leader, Bello Turji.
Gen. Musa had on February 10th, vowed that the Nigerian military would soon eliminate the most feared bandit leader in the North-West who has been responsible for orchestrating numerous attacks and killing of hundreds of residents of Zamfara State.
Musa had made the boast during a press briefing in Abuja where he assured that it was just a matter of time before the dreaded bandit is wiped out.
Describing Turji as a deranged fellow who would soon meet his waterloo, Musa had said:
“On the issue of Turji, like I said, he is just a deranged individual who feels power, but I can bet you that it’s just a matter of time.
“It is a matter of time, we’re going to get him, and I can assure you that it will be within the shortest possible time. We’re going to address that issue on the issue of payment of levy to bandits. That is what they live on. And it shows you the desperation they are in.
“One, even when they get the money, they don’t have a way to use it. Two is that the money they’re getting, they know, is blood money. And that is why we all must come together to work with members of the armed forces and security agencies to deny them the ability to move freely within our communities.”
“We are going to get him and I can assure you within the shortest possible time, we are going to address that issue”.
But one week after the boast by the CDS, Turji is still walking free and has even elevated his terrorism to another level by releasing a series of videos where he mocked the military and dared them to come after him as he is not afraid of them.
In one of such videos released two days after Gen. Musa’s press conference, Turji, dressed in full military fatigue and brandishing sophisticated weapons had boldly called out the Army Chief by name and charged him to get all the weapons in the military arsenal and come after him.
In another video, Turji showed some of his kidnapped victims and insisted that the N50 million ransom he placed for their release must be paid before he would release them.
In yet another video, the bandit kingpin taunted the Nigerian government and security operatives, asking them when the chase for him would commence. He then asked rhetorically whether they are scared of him.
In all of this, concerned Nigerians are still hoping and waiting for the fulfilment of the promise made by Gen. Musa on apprehending or eliminating Turji.
