According to Capt. Ado Sanusi, Managing Director of Aero Contractors, the current rise in disruptive behaviors among airline passengers is cause for concern and should not be taken lightly.
In an interview with our correspondent, Sanusi stated that the current threats are signs of a far larger problem in the industry and cannot be separated from the difficulties facing the sector.
He emphasized that this financial fragility also affected the aviation agencies, particularly the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), and that the nation’s airlines operate on extremely narrow profit margins.
“Now is the right time for the government to address the growing issues in the industry, beginning with a comprehensive review of the regulatory framework and its enforcement, among other things,” he said.
It has become painfully evident that recent incidents—from a passenger who was violently restrained for allegedly refusing to turn off her phone to instances where people use their “celebrity status” to evade responsibility—are not isolated incidents, but rather signs of a much larger problem in our aviation sector, he said.

“The main cause of the issue is that airlines have extremely narrow profit margins. The system is brittle, reactive, and frequently unfair due to the financial fragility of both the regulator and the carriers.
“A comprehensive, systemic overhaul is required rather than a band-aid solution: begin with a thorough examination of the regulatory environment and enforcement culture, examine the ways in which airlines and service providers are tracked and held responsible, and establish procedures that fairly safeguard passengers’ rights.”
He cautioned that if the government didn’t take the required steps to examine the current system, the annoyances might worsen and put system safety at much greater risk.
He suggested that instead of covering up cracks, we should address the underlying cause.
