Amid the controversy trailing the August 30 local government election in Rivers State, a socio-political group, PDP Vanguard, has called on residents to take part in the polls.

The group, in a statement issued after its meeting on Friday, urged citizens to turn out en masse “to cast their votes for any candidate of their choice.”

The statement, signed by its coordinator, Edwin Woko, reaffirmed the group’s support for restoring democratic governance across the 23 local government councils in the state.

Woko acknowledged the setback caused by the lingering political crisis in Rivers, noting that it “almost exposed the economic and social activities to collapse.”

The group also appealed to political stakeholders to cease hostilities and prioritize the collective interest of the state above personal ambitions.

It further urged support for initiatives that would promote peace and bring an end to the crisis.

The statement pointed out the exclusion of its members from nominations into elective offices and political appointments.

The group, therefore, called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, to intervene and ensure its members are included in decision-making processes where necessary.

The local government elections, originally slated for August 9 but rescheduled to August 30, have faced widespread criticism, with some arguing that the Sole Administrator of the state, retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, lacks the constitutional authority to conduct the polls.
