Rivers Local Government Elections: APC Begins Campaigns, Hands Out Flags to Candidates

Rivers State’s All Progressives Congress officially launched its campaigns for the August 30, 2025 elections on Thursday, presenting flags to the party’s nominees for chairmanship and councillorship.

The state APC chairman, Chief Tony Okocha, spoke to a throng represented by all of the state’s LGAs and reaffirmed the party’s determination to win the 23 chairmanship and councillorship positions, including the state’s 319 wards.

Party members were urged by Okocha to take the campaigns to all parts of the state after he praised them for their unity in restoring the APC to its rightful position in Rivers politics.

We are performing a ritual today because every system has its own procedures, he explained.

“Many of you have been dying to get out there and start raising money. Upon completion, you will have the freedom to explore every inch of the 319 walls and campaign, as well as the 23 local government regions.

Okocha reiterated his claim that the local council elections held on October 5, 2024, were defective. In the RSIEC stakeholders meeting earlier this month, Okocha had insisted that the APC will run in the council elections.

He said to the audience on Thursday, “You will remember that there was something that was a charade a while back. Even though APC indicated we wouldn’t be taking part, we didn’t. We told them there wouldn’t be any problems. It won’t succeed. Is it working? But no!

We are brave, content, and thrilled to be here today to inform you that the procedures that RISEC has put in place are correct because they are correct. We are here to help and adhere to those procedures. Our personnel have been vetted, and they have been selected as potential chairman and council members.

“Give me another chance to congratulate my friends who are the chairmen-elect and their deputies. Congratulations to the council members-elect and their deputy members as well. There was no problem throughout the primaries. Never heard anyone fight? Since our political party is organized, we are telling you that everything is set up.

We will do more than simply test the waters now. APC, we will not be testing the waters on August 30. It is our intention to run for office and win. Okocha stated, “We are going there to run in this election in an attempt to win the 319 wards and the 23 local government areas in Rivers State.”

The senator who previously represented Rivers South East, Magnus Ngei Abe, also spoke on behalf of Victory Giadom, the National Vice Chairman (South South) of the APC, and he praised the togetherness and cohesion that Tony Okocha had brought about within the party.

He claimed that it is unlawful for anyone else to claim to be the state’s party leader.

“Rivers State is united,” stated Abe. We are uniting as a society, and everyone who cares about River State is on board. It is a waste of time for those who are not on board to announce themselves as the party’s leaders on television.

“We’re getting ahead together. APC membership is open to all residents of Rivers State. Together with the present chairman, let’s bring democracy’s benefits to the people at large,” he remarked.

Maureen Tamuno, a former Nigerian High Commissioner to Haiti, Jamaica, Belize, and the Dominican Republic, has praised the movement to include women in decision-making and political processes.

The women of Rivers State have a single voice, she declared. The unity and peace that we currently enjoy in Rivers State are the result of our dedication to the fear of God.

When the time comes, we women with grassroots roots will undoubtedly reap the benefits of democracy, we would want to reassure you. Therefore, River State will eventually start to experience the Renewed Hope of Mr. President,” she stated.
