In a significant political realignment before of the general elections in 2027, the Nenadi Usman-led branch of the Labour Party in Rivers State formally dissolved its whole party structure into the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Gogo Wellington, the faction’s chairman, made the announcement on Monday during a news conference that the state’s party leaders and supporters attended.

Speaking to party members, Wellington urged supporters of the Labour Party and Obidient Movement in Rivers State to support Peter Obi, the party’s former presidential candidate.

A coalition of opposition leaders aiming to remove President Bola Tinubu in 2027 has accepted the ADC, and he invited followers in all 23 local government areas of the state to support it.

“We encourage all Labour Party members in Rivers State’s 23 local government districts to join our leader, Mr. Peter Obi, in the African Democratic Congress, or ADC,” Wellington declared.

Wellington clarified that the decision to dismantle the party structure was influenced by the nation’s growing insecurity and economic difficulties.

He claims that like-minded Nigerians who want a shift in leadership and administration must act quickly as a group to address the current predicament.

“It is clear that the time to save this country is now or never due to the declining state of our economy and growing insecurity,” he continued.

Additionally, the head of the Rivers LP group made a direct plea to members of the Obidient Movement, which was a major source of support for Peter Obi during the 2023 presidential election, to adopt the new platform.

Wellington declared, “We urge all Obidient Movement members to join the coalition for a better Nigeria.”

According to reports, Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, recently defected to the ADC after joining a group of opposition figures planning to run against President Tinubu for reelection in 2027.

His adherents in other states have proceeded to take similar actions in response to his defection; the collapse of the Nenadi Usman-led LP group into the ADC in Rivers State is seen as one of the most important to date.
