As South-South stakeholders respond to President Bola Tinubu’s recent intervention to stop the impeachment threat against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, the political tug-of-war in Rivers State continues to draw opposing viewpoints.
While some applauded the President’s attempts to bring peace back to the oil-rich state, others questioned the validity and justice of his action, particularly in light of mounting worries about Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, and his political domination.
In an interview with Vanguard, Joseph Ambakaderimo, the chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Community Committee of Oil and Gas Producing Areas of the Niger Delta States and convener of the South-South Reawakening Group, praised Tinubu as “a smart politician who knows what he wants and goes all out for it.”
Ambakaderimo praised the President’s effort to prevent Fubara from being impeached once more, but cautioned Tinubu to “be very careful about those pushing him against the FCT Minister, Wike.”
According to him, “Wike is to Tinubu what the late Tony Anenih was to former President Obasanjo.”
Additionally, Ambakaderimo asserted that Governor Fubara has the political clout necessary to produce the kind of electoral outcomes Wike was able to obtain for the APC in the general elections of 2023.
“Only Wike and Fubara can resolve their issues, not the President or anybody else,” he declared. I think the President’s stance is beneficial to Rivers State and its citizens as a whole.
Omenazu: “Tinubu’s Actions Are Not Presidential”
Dr. Jackson Omenazu, the Chancellor of the International Society for Social Justice and Human Rights, on the other hand, criticized President Tinubu’s handling of the situation, calling it a lack of presidential grace.
He cautioned that in order to fully comprehend Tinubu’s political approach, it should be examined.
There is no room for two leaders in the same state if we follow the APC’s manifesto. Why is Fubara unable to lead Rivers State’s politics? Does this occur in other states ruled by the APC? “What?” Omenazu asked.
He criticized the President for not upholding justice and fairness, claiming that “Governor Fubara is highly subjugated.”
Tinubu did not act in a sufficiently presidential manner. He formerly served as governor. Wike was a governor, too. “Were they given the same treatment as Fubara today?” he inquired.
Omenazu emphasized that the President does not have the constitutional authority to choose a state’s political leader—only the APC’s national chairman does.
