President Vladimir Putin of Azerbaijan acknowledged Russia’s responsibility while outlining the causes of the 2024 Christmas Day jet disaster in Dushanbe.
38 persons lost their lives when Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 8243 from Baku crashed close to Aktau, Kazakhstan. The Embraer 190 carried five crew members and 67 citizens from Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan.
During a meeting with President Ilham Aliyev on Thursday, Putin affirmed that the inquiry into the disaster “caused by several factors” is almost finished by the necessary authorities.
The president revealed that three Ukrainian drones that had crossed the federation’s border the night before the disaster were being tracked by Russian military.
The second reason was “technical malfunctions in Russia’s air defense system,” since two launched missiles missed the plane.

Recalling that he had to turn back after the airplane went down while he was his route to a meeting in St Petersburg, President Aliyev responded by thanking his Russian colleague for managing this issue.
According to Aliyev, despite the tragedy, the two countries’ economic and commercial relations have improved dramatically in 2025, and all other aspects of their bilateral relations have also improved.
The president constantly accused Moscow of hiding the facts of the accident and refusing to acknowledge its responsibility, and in July he stated that Azerbaijan would be suing Russia in international tribunals.
