In a stunning disclosure, Senator Sumaila Kawu, representing Kano South, has revealed that his monthly take-home package exceeds N21 million, contradicting the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission’s (RMAFC) recent statement.

RMAFC Chairman Mohammed Shehu had claimed that each senator receives a total of N1.06 million in salary and N21 million per month, amounting to N12.72 million annually. However, Senator Kawu’s revelation suggests a significant disparity, sparking controversy over lawmakers’ actual earnings.

In an interview with the British Broadcasting Hausa Service, Kawu admitted that his monthly salary is around N1 million, but his total take-home package is N21 million, a substantial difference from the RMAFC’s figures.

“The amount of salary received per month is less than one million naira, if there are cuts, it comes back to about six hundred thousand naira and a little something as salary,” said the senator.

He further noted that the administrative fees he receives as a member of the Senate which includes running the office is twenty one million naira per month.

“Because of the increase, in the Senate, each senator is given twenty one million naira every month as the cost of running his office,” he said.

He added that he earns a total of 22 million naira as a senator.

“I don’t know of any money that was given to me as a senator,” he said.

This shocking revelation raises questions about transparency and accountability in the nation’s financial management, with many calling for clarity on lawmakers’ remuneration packages.
