Laolu Akande, a former presidential spokesperson and political commentator, has urged the Department of State Services (DSS) to put more urgent national matters ahead of Pat Utomi.
In a Friday interview with Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Akande made this statement in response to the security agency’s legal action against Utomi.
Remember how the DSS sued Utomi, claiming he was trying to create a shadow government in order to unlawfully seize President Bola Tinubu’s executive authority?
However, Akande downplayed concerns about the shadow government, saying it was a harmless political statement and not a national security danger.

“I would suggest that the DSS employees not overburden themselves. The DSS should be focused on more pressing issues. Come on, let’s do it. “Just give Utomi some space; he’s just enjoying himself,” he remarked.

Instead of undermining the government, Akande contended, the idea was meant to promote political participation and provide ideological alternatives.

“I couldn’t say if it’s illegal or not. I’ll leave that decision to the lawyers. However, I believe it’s a manifestation of an idea,” he said.

Akande pointed out what he called a “serious vacuum” in Nigerian politics and criticized the opposition parties, especially the Labour Party and Peoples Democratic Party, for failing to adequately discuss policies with the ruling party.

Professor Pat Utomi deserves recognition for his recognition of the significant void, even when it comes to challenging the current administration’s policies. Whether it’s the PDP or the LP, the opposition has totally lost that footing,” he said.

He added that the goal of Utomi’s strategy is to provide constructive advice to fill a leadership void rather than seize control of the country.
