According to reports, armed bandits in Niger State’s Borgu Local Government Area have burned a police station in the neighboring Konkoso regions and killed six people in Tungan-Makeri.

More than 200 armed men reportedly broke into Tungan Makeri at around 8:00 p.m. on Friday, firing intermittently and burning a number of homes.

Six individuals were killed and numerous others were displaced, according to residents, who said the attackers worked for hours.

Countless motorcycles carrying the armed men were seen by an eyewitness from Zagatina village, which was along the attackers’ path.

“I counted about 41 motorcycles as they went through my village, and each one had two or three people on it, some of whom were ladies and children.

“When I saw them approaching, I immediately hid in the bush because they went through the back of my house,” the resident remarked.

The bandits apparently moved onto Konkoso on Wednesday morning after the attack on Tungan Makeri, where they allegedly operated without any security personnel in sight.

The town’s police station was set on fire during the incursion, which increased local tensions.

The major settlements in Borgu LGA, according to the locals, are Tungan-Makeri and Konkoso. This raised fears about the assailants’ increasing audacity.

An Air Force plane was also said to have been seen in the vicinity of Tungan Makeri following the initial assault, which some locals believe compelled the bandits to leave the area.

As of the time of posting this article, attempts to get official confirmation from the Niger State Police Command were fruitless.

In order to stop future attacks, locals in Borgu LGA are demanding immediate reinforcement in response to the incident, which has once again sparked security fears in several areas.
