The offices of his previous party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Uyo are still decorated with campaign billboards and photos of Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno, some six months after he defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Governor Eno reportedly resigned from the PDP in mid-October and formally joined the APC on June 6, 2025. But according to Leadership, his presence is still noticeable in the PDP’s large state secretariat.
According to checks, armed police officers have been stationed in the PDP secretariat to prevent further conflicts between the party’s opposing sections.
According to a party leader who spoke with Leadership, the police were called in after a group led by Osagiefo Igwatt Umoren tried to forcibly seize the secretariat from Elder Aniekan Akpan, the legitimately elected chairman.
The insider stated, “The police officers have been here since the Osagiefo Umoren-led factional PDP Exco attempted a civilian coup to remove the elected chairman and officials from office.”
After Governor Eno defected, the secretariat—once a symbol of PDP control in Akwa Ibom—became a focal point of internal power struggles.
When Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike visited the state at Governor Eno’s invitation to commission the Ika–Azumini Road project, the previous chairman, Elder Akpan, and other PDP executives reportedly met him. This led to an increase in internal strife.
Osagiefo Umoren became the new chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Executive Council after the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) disbanded it.
Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the party’s national secretary, quickly objected to the decision, arguing that the NWC had not convened in an official meeting to authorize the dissolution.
“We also have good authority that the NWC did not call a formal sitting to make such a decision,” Akpan stated.
“Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the National Secretary of the PDP, has released a press statement denying such publications and confirming that no formal meeting was held to sanction the dissolution of our State Exco.”
