Sokoto State Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) held its highly anticipated state executive council election on December 21, 2024, with Usman Binji emerging as the chairman following a keenly contested race.
The election, which took place at the NUJ Secretariat, saw two prominent candidates, Siraju Sifawa and Usman Binji, vying for the chairmanship position, while other positions went uncontested.
Binji, a senior reporter with NTA, Sokoto office, secured a resounding victory in the competitive and transparent election process, which reflected the democratic principles upheld by the NUJ. A seasoned journalist with extensive media management experience, Binji garnered widespread support, winning by a convincing margin of 86 votes, while his main challenger, Siraju Sifawa, secured 29 votes.
In his acceptance speech, Binji expressed deep gratitude to the journalists of Sokoto State and promised to work tirelessly to elevate the union, address the challenges faced by journalists, and improve the welfare of its members. He also emphasized the importance of unity within the union, noting that collaboration would be essential in overcoming the evolving challenges of the media profession.
“I am reminded today of the power of unity and collective purpose. Our union is founded on the principles of solidarity, professionalism, and advocacy,” Binji said. “As your chairman, I pledge to uphold these principles and work towards a more vibrant, inclusive, and effective union.”
He extended his appreciation to Siraju Sifawa, his opponent, for a spirited campaign, stating, “Your passion and commitment to our union are inspiring, and I look forward to working with you to achieve our shared goals.”
Binji also committed to prioritizing the welfare and development of the union’s members, focusing on training and capacity-building opportunities, advocating for better working conditions, and promoting excellence and professionalism within the industry.
“We will work to support the Sokoto State Government, under the able leadership of His Excellency, Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, in its efforts to ensure good governance and steer the state towards sustainable development,” Binji added.
Siraju Sifawa, Binji’s main opponent, was also a strong contender with significant experience in journalism. His campaign focused on revitalizing the union, improving its financial standing, and ensuring better working conditions for journalists in Sokoto State. His efforts were acknowledged by many of his supporters during the election.
The election was conducted by a neutral electoral committee, ensuring a free, fair, and credible process. Journalists from across Sokoto State turned out in large numbers to vote, demonstrating their commitment to strengthening the union’s leadership. The event was characterized by a peaceful atmosphere, with both candidates urging their supporters to maintain calm and respect for one another, regardless of the outcome. Observers noted that the election adhered to the guidelines set by the NUJ national body.
Binji’s victory is seen as the beginning of a new chapter for the Sokoto State NUJ. As chairman, he will be expected to address critical issues, including improving the working conditions of journalists, safeguarding press freedom, and fostering unity within the union. His leadership is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the union’s operations, with a focus on modernizing its activities and enhancing engagement with the public and media stakeholders.
The other elected members of the executive council are: Aminu Aliyu S. Dole (Vice Chairman), Muhammad Nasir Bello (Secretary), Abubakar Abdullahi Ghani (Assistant Secretary), Umar A. Shehu (Treasurer), Samaila Muhammad (Financial Secretary), and Ibrahim Salihu (Auditor).
In his address, the immediate past chairman of the council, Abdullah Dalhatu Safiya-Maigori, expressed gratitude for the support he received during his tenure. He thanked the Sokoto State Government for facilitating the participation of state delegates at the 2024 Triennial Delegate Conference in Owerri, Imo State, and for organizing a capacity-building training for journalists in the state. He called on members to offer full support to the incoming executive council.
