Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi, a member of the Nigerian Army, is said to have slain his wife and then committed suicide at the Wawa Cantonment in Niger State. The Nigerian Army has confirmed his death.
Capt. Stephen Nwankwo, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin, released a statement stating that the terrible event took place on October 11 at the 221 Battalion quarters within the cantonment.
“The soldier, who was on duty within the cantonment, requested permission from his superior to attend to some personal issues but failed to return to his post,” Nwankwo stated, according to the preliminary investigation.
He clarified that the soldier and his wife were found dead inside their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters, when coworkers went to see how he was doing.
“A thorough investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the tragic event, and their remains have been preserved,” he continued.
The Army expressed sympathy to the couple’s friends, family, and coworkers and called the occurrence sad and regretful.
Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, Commander of 22 Armoured Brigade, promised that the issue would be looked at in detail and that the results will be released to the public.
“The Army is deeply sorry for this regrettable situation. As we carry out a thorough investigation to stop similar incidents in the future, we ask for the public’s cooperation and understanding,” he said.
