In response to their refusal to comply with the government’s directive to start opening markets on Mondays, Anambra State Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo closed the Nkwo Nnewi Spare Parts Market for a week.
Chief Evarist Uba, the governor’s special adviser on trade and markets, closed the market on the governor’s behalf, according to a news statement issued by Dr. Law Mefor, the Anambra State Commissioner for Information.
Just three weeks have passed since Soludo visited Onitsha Main Market and closed it for failing to operate on Mondays.
“I am informing the public that the New Auto Spare Parts Associiation (NASPA) Market, located in Nkwo Nnewi, is currently closed,” he said.
Following poor adherence to Mr. Governor Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s directive to end Monday sit-at-homes in Anambra State, the market was closed.
“On behalf of the governor, Chief Evarist Uba, the Special Advisor to the Governor on Trade and Markets, along with Commissioner for Information Dr. Law Mefor, Special Advisor to the Governor on Security AVM Ben Chiobi (Rtd), and Nnewi Mayor, Hon. Anazodo, Echezona.
“Therefore, the market will reopen on Monday, March 2, 2026, after being closed since midnight today, Monday, February 23, 2026.”
In order to prevent problems with law enforcement, he cautioned traders and consumers to stay away from the market until Monday of next week.
He went on to say that if there is not significant compliance by Monday, when the market reopens, the market might be further closed.
