Nigerian players Paul Onuachu and Joe Aribo were praised by Southampton’s head coach Ivan Juric for their roles in Saturday’s crucial victory over Ipswich Town.
Southampton had suffered greatly in the run-up to the game at Portman Road, winning just one of their last 23 league games and finishing last in the standings.
Onuachu’s late winner and Aribo’s opening goal, however, not only gave the squad three points but also represented Juric’s first triumph since taking over.
For us, this is an amazing moment. Even while we performed well in some games, including the one against Manchester United, we were unable to earn any points. On Southampton’s official website, Juric wrote, “Even though we had some difficult times, the players displayed incredible perseverance, and we really deserved this victory.”
He emphasized the team’s character in their defensive efforts, even though they had to make tactical adjustments due to players like Jack Stephens and Harwood-Bellis.
The brilliance in Onuachu’s goal, which demonstrated the extraordinary qualities of both Paul Onuachu and Deeno (Kamaldeen), gave Juric confidence in his team’s abilities.
One of the highlights was seeing Onuachu’s efforts pay off; he deserved to be on the scoresheet. His second objective is this, and I think he can do even more,” said Juric.
Aribo’s versatility and determination were also acknowledged by Juric, who called him a key member of the team. Regardless of whether he plays midfield, defense, or forward, Joe is exceptional; he prioritizes the needs of the team. He performed admirably today, even though he played left center back in the second half. Every member of the team put up a lot of effort, but Joe stood out today, according to the coach.

Notwithstanding the favorable result, Southampton faces the prospect of relegation to the EFL Championship as they now have just nine points from 24 English Premier League games.
