Omoyele Sowore, an African Action Congress presidential candidate and human rights advocate, has accused the Nigerian police of detaining Nnamdi Kanu’s brother and his attorney, Aloy Ejimakor, during Monday’s #FreeNnamdiKanuNow demonstration in Abuja.
While dispersing protesters demanding the release of the imprisoned leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Sowore said in a post on his 𝕏 Twitter that the security personnel also detained onlookers.
“Nnamdi Kanu’s brother, his attorney, @AloyEjimakor, and innocent onlookers were taken into custody by the @PoliceNG team that was sent in to brutalize #FreeNnamdiKanuNow demonstrators. After being assaulted, they were brought to the FCT leadership. “They must be released right away by the police!” Sowore wrote.
Security personnel reportedly used tear gas and live ammunition to scatter demonstrators in the Central Business District of Abuja. Traffic was disrupted and commuters became panicked as a result.
The police also blocked down a number of important thoroughfares in the city center, which caused traffic jams and confusion for both pedestrians and drivers.
The Nigeria Police had set off several districts of Abuja as protest-restricted zones prior to the rally.
CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, a force spokeswoman, reminded organizations that protests were prohibited within and near key government buildings by an Abuja Federal High Court.
These consist of Shehu Shagari Way, Eagle Square, the Court of Appeal, Force Headquarters, the National Assembly Complex, and Aso Rock Villa.
He called on all parties, whether in favor of or opposed to Kanu’s release, to rigorously follow the order in order to prevent conflict and preserve public order.
Since his re-arrest and extraordinary rendition from Kenya in June 2021, Nnamdi Kanu has been under the custody of the Department of State Services.
