Another important figure in the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Buba Galadima, has highlighted the difficulties of being outspoken and unyielding in Nigeria’s political climate. Reflecting on his many years of active politics, Galadima discussed in an interview with Channels Television how speaking the truth and being outspoken in the nation frequently leads to persecution rather than reward.
Galadima claims that Nigerian politics is set up in a way that makes boldness and honesty extremely costly on both a personal and political level. “Regardless of their ability or contributions, leaders who dare to speak truth to power are typically blacklisted, marginalized, and purposefully excluded from positions of influence,” he stated. According to the NNPP chieftain, integrity is not rewarded in Nigeria’s political system; rather, people who oppose injustice and impunity are punished. He emphasised that his decades-long experience is evidence that many politicians are more focused on protecting themselves and their political godfathers than on justice, accountability, or serving the people.
Galadima continued by narrating a personal experience that brought to light the vengeful character of Nigerian politics. He described how his daughter was denied rights and advantages based only on her affiliation with him, even after she ran for and was elected to a councilor seat. Although she had won the election legitimately, she was penalized for her relationship with a guy that the political establishment considered a “troublemaker,” not for any personal transgressions.
“This demonstrates how retaliatory politics can be in Nigeria, where individuals are punished for their affiliations rather than their actions,” he said. He claims that because this type of political victimization fosters an atmosphere where integrity, hard effort, and merit are frequently disregarded, it deters young Nigerians from actively engaging in politics.

The seasoned politician also stressed that the issue is not limited to individual experiences. He maintained that the entire society suffers when vocal people are repressed or marginalized because conformity is valued more highly than truth. Galadima’s remarks highlight a more general fact that many political analysts have recognized: intimidation, nepotism, and patronage continue to play a significant role in Nigeria’s democratic process. Real political change is challenging because reformers who question the system are either shut out or punished.
