Nigerian musician Oludipe Oluwasanmi David, better known by his stage name Spyro, has talked about how his career was influenced by his faith, even when it meant defying his own team’s advise.
According to reports, Spyro left his record label in 2019 to launch his own, employing personal and bank loans to finance the endeavor without outside funding.
Some teammates encouraged him to remove “Christ Ambassador” from his profile and abandon his “Jesus Boy” brand along the way, arguing that it diminished his appeal.
Declaring that he would sooner die than have Jesus taken away from him, Spyro refused to back down.
Insisting that his faith would open doors for him, he also rejected a proposal to substitute “Child of God” for it.
He wrote: “I want to give you a quick explanation of why I am very grateful today. We took out bank and personal debts to get started after I quit the label I was signed to in 2019 to start my own. Since then, no outside financial assistance of any kind has been provided.

Then, one morning, I was approached by many team members who wanted to know more about my “Jesus Boy” brand. I was instructed to take down the “Christ Ambassador” that I had written on my profile at the time, and they indicated that we might need to change this brand because we don’t think it’s working for us.
“I recall declaring that I would sooner die than have Jesus removed from my profile as it swiftly descended into a heated argument. I could see their point of view—that being associated with Jesus confines me and doesn’t seem lucrative—but when they realized I wasn’t going to back down, someone suggested I at least modify it to “Child of God,” which is a more inclusive term in his opinion.
“I informed them that Jesus, whom I proclaim, would pave the path for me, and I declined once more. One of my teammates phoned me recently and told me, “I am proud of you because you are in a very good place, but many artists are suffering right now—no deals, no shows.”
