Julius Abure was acknowledged as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, but the Supreme Court overturned that decision.
After previously concluding that the case’s core issue concerned the party’s leadership, the Supreme Court reportedly ruled unanimously on Friday that the Court of Appeal lacked the authority to name Abure the LP’s national chairman.
It maintained that courts had no jurisdiction over the leadership dispute because it was a party internal matter.
Senator Nenadi Usman and one other filed an appeal, which the Supreme Court granted, ruling that it was meritorious.
The cross-appeal submitted by the Abure group of the LP was then dismissed as unmeritorious.

The Appeal Court’s Decision
Abure was acknowledged as the National Chairman of the LP by the Appeal Court in Abuja on January 17, 2025, in a ruling written by Justice Hamma Barka.
The court’s November 2024 finding that acknowledged Abure as the party’s chairman was supported by Justice Barka in this ruling.
On the basis that the lower court lacked jurisdiction to hear the action, the order nullified a Federal High Court judgment from Abuja that was delivered on October 8, 2024.
“The lower court did not have the authority to consider the suit in the first place, so we cannot say that this appeal fails or succeeds,” Barka ruled.
