The leadership of the Potter’s House congregation in Dallas, Texas, has been transferred to Bishop T.D. Jakes’s daughter and son-in-law.
Jakes reportedly made the announcement on Sunday morning, April 27, 2025, weeks after having a severe heart attack while giving a sermon at the church.
The clergy said that one factor in the decision was being admitted to the hospital following a severe heart attack on stage.
The Potter’s House was established in 1996 by T.D. Jakes, who confirmed that his daughter and son-in-law, pastors Sarah Jakes Roberts and Toure Roberts, will assume leadership in July.
“You have shown faithfulness to God and to me,” he continued. And I am very appreciative.
“After November, I can’t afford to risk something happening to me and you being a sheep without a shepherd.”
As your daughter, Sarah Jakes Roberts remarked, “I am honored and appreciative.
“I’m delighted you’ll be getting some sleep.”
During the TODAY show, Jakes described the severe heart attack in an interview with American presenter Craig Melvin.

Although Jakes said he did not experience any signs of a cardiac arrest, medical professionals later informed him that he was preaching while only half of his heart was functioning.
“Until I arrived at the hospital in an ambulance and fussed that it happened onstage, by the way, because I didn’t want it to happen,” he added, “I didn’t really realize what was happening to me onstage.” The doctor then bent over my ear and said, “You had a massive heart attack.”
Since I didn’t exhibit any of the symptoms listed, I was unaware of it.
Nothing, not even numbness or acute pain. I fell into a sort of sleep. I nearly died of something I couldn’t identify.
Five minutes later, I would have been dead when I arrived, the doctor stated.
“My right side of the heart was no longer receiving any blood at all.”
