Professor Palamagamba Kabudi, Tanzania’s Minister of Information, Culture, Arts, and Sports, has issued a challenge to the Taifa Stars to grasp the opportunity and make history at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), beginning with a crucial match against Nigeria.
The Group C match is more important for Tanzania and is set for December 23 at the Fez Stadium in Morocco. 46 years after their first encounter, this will be the two countries’ second AFCON group-stage match. At the Lagos National Stadium in Surulere on March 8, 1980, Nigeria prevailed 3-1 in the previous encounter.
Kabudi urged the athletes to approach the competition with discipline, solidarity, and a strong feeling of patriotism during his speech during the formal national flag handover ceremony in Cairo.
Tanzania advanced to the quarterfinals of the Africa Nations Championship undefeated. That was both historic and a national record. “I implore you to put up a strong fight and create history at AFCON once more,” Kabudi declared.
In all competitions, Tanzania and Nigeria have met five times. Nigeria has won three of their meetings; the other two have been in draws.
In addition to Nigeria, Tanzania’s joint campaign will usher in a new phase of rivalry in East Africa. They will first face Uganda in an AFCON group stage. Tanzania has only won five of the 22 games between the neighbors, while Uganda has won 13.
Tanzania’s last Group C matchup will be against Tunisia, a well-known rival who defeated them 1-0 in their most recent encounter during the 2021 AFCON qualifications.
Additionally, Kabudi affirmed that the team in Morocco will have clear government support. In order to boost morale and make sure the players experience the full support of the country as they pursue a historic campaign, he disclosed that Deputy Minister Paul Makonda, together with other top authorities, will travel with the team.
