In Taraba State, Chief David Sani Kente, a leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has vehemently refuted rumors that he is responsible for alleged attempts to recruit Governor Agbu Kefas of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the APC.
Kente, who was the Social Democratic Party’s (SDP) 2015 candidate for governor of Taraba state, called the allegations baseless and detrimental to his political character in a phone conversation with reporters in Jalingo on Monday.
He made it clear that he has not been contacted by Governor Kefas about any intentions for defection and insisted that no such conversations have occurred.
As we speak, the governor has not indicated to me that he intends to join the APC.
Over the past two years, almost every member of the APC has shunned me and turned down proposals from the national government that were intended for me, Kente claimed.
Kente bemoaned the fact that the persistent rumor had lowered his political status within the party, with some APC members accusing him of secretly arranging the governor’s defection.
He said, “By claiming that I orchestrated the governor’s plans to join the APC, they have further harmed my political programs.”
The APC mainstay, who shares a local government council with Governor Kefas, is disappointed that he and other influential Southern Taraba politicians have not been consulted about any potential change.
“We, his close allies in the APC, are reporting it as a rumor, just as you are.
“The governor has not gotten in touch with any of us as of yet,” Kente stated, referring to an exchange with Senator Joel Danlami Ikenya, who likewise denied being notified.
Formerly vowing out of respect not to run against Kefas, Kente made a suggestion that the changing political climate might compel him to change his mind.
According to him, “dynamics are changing, and when dynamics change, decisions also change.”
Kente thought back to his previous political endeavors, including the 2016 APC formation in Southern Taraba that he and Senator Ikenya worked on.
In his view, the Jukun community’s ancient beliefs necessitate mutual respect and consultation, particularly when it comes to delicate political decisions like defection.
“If our brother was considering joining our party, he should have informed us in accordance with our culture. However, at this moment, we only have rumors,” he stated.
APC members were urged by Kente to avoid criticizing him for something he claims he has no knowledge of and to ignore the rumors.
“If the governor is really thinking about visiting the APC, it isn’t our knowledge or involvement,” he said firmly.
