Top Northern politicians have come under fire from Senator Shehu Sani, a PDP chieftain, for threatening to exploit the contentious tax reform proposals to undermine President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 reelection.
In an interview with The Sun, former legislator Sani urged the North to restructure and consider how the Northerners in Asiwaju’s administration could help the region grow.
He emphasized that Northerners have been granted access to important institutions in President Tinubu’s administration.

According to Shehu Sani, “He has given the North all the important ministries and institutions.” Kaduna State natives make up the Chief of Defense Staff. The National Security Advisor hails from Adamawa State and is Northern. Both the Agriculture Minister and the State Agriculture Minister are Northerners. Jigawa State’s and Zamfara State’s respective ministers of defense and state for defense are Northerners. The education minister was a Northerner until recently.

The Failures of Buhari
Despite numerous setbacks, he noted that Northerners remained silent under the former President Muhammadu Buhari’s term.

Sani claims that Northern leaders would not acknowledge that they had voted for Buhari but that he had lost.

The former congressman claimed that Buhari’s appointment of Northerners to positions did not further the North’s interests.

The home truth is what we should tell ourselves, Shehu Sani stated. What did he do during the 96 months that our own was in power? People said nothing about all the failures. He was not held accountable by them. They would not condemn him. “We voted for you, and you failed,” they refused to say.

In Northern Nigeria, he was unable to build any significant roads for eight years. He worked for eight years without being able to turn on the Mambila power plant. He spent eight years without being able to dredge or restore the Niger River. He was unable to dualize the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano express route after eight years. He was unable to dualize the express routes in Kano, Kaduna, and Lagos during his eight years there. There is no evidence to support the billions of naira he spent on agriculture.

“The Northern interests have not been served by the Northerners he selected to positions of authority. What right do you have to threaten someone else with reelection if you are incapable of holding your son accountable, if you remained mute, if you are silent, and if you folded your arms during Buhari’s administration?
