After the striker’s incredible hat-trick in the Super Eagles’ 4-0 victory over Benin Republic on Tuesday, South Africa’s Teboho Mokoena declared Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen his “Greatest of All Time” (GOAT).
On social media the following day, Mokoena, who plays for Mamelodi Sundowns, expressed his admiration by saying, simply, “My Goat.”
According to reports, the attacker from Nigeria, who is currently with Galatasaray, put on an impressive display at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, propelling his country into the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs.
Osimhen quickly established himself, scoring three minutes into the match following a deft combination with Samuel Chukwueze.
Six minutes after the restart, he scored his hat-trick after jumping on a Moses Simon free-kick. He had already doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 37th minute with a well-timed header from another Chukwueze cross. In stoppage time, Frank Onyeka scored the fourth goal to complete a commanding win.
With the victory, Nigeria earned 15 points and a +7 goal differential, placing them among the top second-place teams in the African qualifiers.
Following South Africa’s 3-0 victory against Rwanda in Mbombela to secure their spot at the World Cup, Mokoena offered his admiration. Top spot in Group C was achieved with 18 points, one more than Nigeria and the Benin Republic, thanks to goals from Talente Mbatha, Oswin Appollis, and Evides Makgopa.
The triumph completed a stunning comeback for Mokoena, who had previously been the subject of controversy when FIFA docked South Africa three points for declaring him unfit to play in their match against Lesotho on March 21.
In spite of that setback, the 27-year-old midfielder was instrumental in Bafana Bafana’s comeback and qualification.
If the Benin Republic had defeated the Super Eagles in Uyo on Tuesday, South Africa would not have been able to secure an automatic World Cup qualifying.
