15-year-old Anis Onyekachukwu Onyemaechi is a teenage goalkeeper who won the Gothia Cup with SKF Nigerian Eagles in Sweden. His impressive performance and aspirations to join the Golden Eaglets team for the WAFU B U17 tournament are a reminder that the Nigerian Football Federation must maintain its integrity by embracing young and raw talents, have zero tolerance for prejudice and discourage age falsification from aspiring players.
Anis Onyekachukwu aims at being chosen for goalkeeping roles in the Golden Eaglets team set to represent Nigeria at the WAFU B U17 tournament next month.
In some of the Golden Eaglets’ training sessions, the 15-year-old senior secondary school student from Chrisland High School in Ikeja, Lagos, who also attended Unique Soccer Academy in Lagos, has displayed moments of creativity which prompted the coaching officials to include him on their team.
At the Gothia Cup, Onyemaechi’s performance was outstanding, helping the SKF Nigerian Eagles win nine games to secure the podium and the U16 tournament title.
He continued his goalkeeping prowess with the Chrisland School Football Team at the DOA football yearly tournament after moving to Nigeria from Sweden, where his school emerged victorious.
Given the traits Onyemaechi has displayed in goal, it is clear that the young goalie, who has shown great character and agility, has a bright future in the beautiful game—as long as he stays committed.
