Residents of Agenebode, the administrative center of Edo State’s Etsako East Local Government Area, demonstrated on Monday against what they said were armed herdsmen carrying out daily murders and kidnappings in their neighborhoods.
As the youngsters urged Governor Monday Okpebholo to take immediate action, it was understood that the demonstration halted business operations in the local towns.
Carrying signs that read #EndKidnappingInAgenebode, #EtsakoEastUnderSiege, and #WhereIsOurGovernor, the demonstrators stormed government buildings and major roads, demanding that the state leader and federal lawmakers act immediately to stop what they described as a “ongoing ethnic cleansing.”

In solidarity with the youth, locals closed their shops, stalls, and businesses.

Several of the banners accused prominent local politicians of ignoring the suffering of their constituents, including Senator Adams Oshiomhole, Minister Abubakar Momoh, and Hon. Sunday Dekere Anamero.

“Oshiomhole, your people are dying in Etsako East, and you’re occupied with NDDC in Port Harcourt!” One sign said.

According to information obtained by Naija News, the demonstration started early on Monday and featured nonviolent processions through the Local Government Secretariat, Bode Ivioghe Road, and Agenebode Market Road. Protesters sang, sung, and called for the government to step in right once to reestablish security.

In a surprising turn of events, employees of the local government were compelled to leave their Secretariat offices and participate in the protest, citing concerns of becoming the next victims.

“We are no longer able to leave for work in peace. “There is a genuine fear of kidnapping,” a council employee said reporters.

In addition, demonstrators demanded the establishment of a permanent military roadblock along the Fugar-Agenebode axis, the building of a new police station, and the enabling of local vigilante organizations to assume command of local security.

The demonstrators called on Governor Okpebholo to restore and support local forest guard initiatives, such as those started by Hon. (Princess) Benedicta Attoh, the suspended LG Chairman, who allegedly collaborated with traditional elders to compensate young people to patrol the forests on shift duty.

“People from our community are escaping their homes. On behalf of the young people who were protesting, Comrade Abdul Ayegbeni issued a warning: “What is happening in Benue must not be allowed to happen in Agenebode.”

Ayegbeni also attacked state and federal legislators who represent Etsako East, saying they are disconnected from the reality on the ground.

In order to plan and supply logistical assistance for grassroots defense, he insisted that Senator Oshiomhole, Minister Momoh, Hon. Kingsley Ugabi, and Representative Sunday Dekere call an emergency security meeting that would include all local vigilante groups and traditional institutions.

We’ve had enough of the quiet. We’re looking for security, not assurances. “Our towns are turning into abandoned settlements,” Ayegbeni continued.

As of the time this article was filed, Naija News is aware that the state administration has not yet issued an official statement on the situation.
