Popular social media influencer Murja Ibrahim Kunya was tried before Justice Simone Amobeda at the state’s Federal High Court, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Kano State Directorate, was able to win his conviction and punishment.
According to reports, Kunya was arrested for allegedly sprinkling naira notes in a humorous manner while lodging at the Tahir Guest Palace in Kano.
Her first arrest took place in January 2025 for violating the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, which prohibits naira mutilation and misuse.
While she awaited her arraignment at the Federal High Court in Kano, the commission granted her administrative bail. However, in an effort to avoid the legal processes, she did not show up for court.
On Sunday, March 16, 2025, EFCC agents successfully re-arrested the TikTok influencer after weeks of intensive investigation and monitoring. On May 20, 2025, she was arraigned and pleaded guilty to the one-count amended charge.
According to the charge against Kunya, “You Murja Ibrahim Kunya committed an offense against Section 21 (1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007 on December 28, 2023, at Tahir Guest Palace, Kano, within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court, while dancing in one of the rooms at Tahir Guest Palace by tampering with Naira notes issued by Central Bank of Nigeria by spraying and matching on the same on said occasion.”

After she entered a guilty plea, Musa Isah, the prosecution’s attorney, went over the case’s facts and asked the court to find her guilty.
Kunya was found guilty by Justice Amobeda on Wednesday and given a six-month prison sentence, with the option to pay a fine of ₦50,000 (fifty thousand naira only).
Because of her substantial following on social media, Justice Amobeda also issued a subsequent decree designating her as an Ambassador for the EFCC and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), charged with spearheading online advocacy efforts against the misuse of the Naira.
According to this direction, Kunya must use her social media following to educate her followers on the value of respecting Nigerian cash and the legal penalties for misusing or damaging it.
