Former Catholic Archbishop of Abuja and cardinal John Onaiyekan has voiced concerns about President Bola Tinubu’s chances in the 2027 election, arguing that if the president sticks to his current policies, his chances of winning reelection could be seriously damaged.
In an interview with reporters in Abuja on Wednesday, Onaiyekan reportedly made the comments after attending the public lecture held by the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN) during Communication Week.
The cardinal warned that there may be a growing gulf between the Nigerian government and its people, which might be harmful to the president’s political destiny.
He asked the president to recognize the hardships faced by regular Nigerians and to emphasize the importance of policies that are in line with the people’s realities.
“My recommendation to Mr. President is to look for ways and means to learn about the real struggles Nigeria is facing,” Onaiyekan stated.
“Not the people who are constantly giving him high praise.” They ought to discover. All leaders now have to do it.

They can claim to have tried their hardest. However, the government exists to ensure that doesn’t occur. The government’s job is to ensure that Nigerians’ standard of living is maintained and, if feasible, enhanced.

If he shifts his focus in that area and implements measures that truly help Nigeria’s impoverished citizens, they will never forget him.
