President Bola Tinubu, on Thursday, directed security agencies to intensify their efforts against illegal miners, labeling them “exploiters and scavengers” in the country’s mining sector.

During a presentation by the National Defence College’s Course 32 participants, titled “Harnessing the Mining Industry for Enhanced National Security and Development: Strategic Options for Nigeria by 2035,” Tinubu emphasized the need for mineral exploration companies to prioritize the health and safety of Nigerians and host communities.

This directive, as quoted in a statement by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, signals a renewed commitment to regulating the mining sector and protecting the interests of Nigerian citizens and communities.

“We have challenges of scavengers and exploiters around the country. We must nip that in the bud, and you military officers understand this better than the civil society.

‘‘We expect that through your command, we will have more resources that we need to make sure we have a stable economic environment,” the President said.

The President expressed concern for the well-being of those living near mining areas, stressing the importance of safe exploration practices.

He tasked security agencies with taking decisive action against illegal miners, stating, “We must nip that in the bud… We expect that through your command, we will have more resources to ensure a stable economic environment.”
