According to reports, on Thursday, September 18, Tinubu ordered the suspended governor to return to work in a statement.
President Tinubu made the following seven main arguments in his statement:
1. Context for the Emergency Situation
Nigerians were reminded by President Tinubu that a state of emergency was imposed on March 18, 2025, because Rivers State’s governance was paralyzed. A void in governance was brought about by the rupture between the Governor and the House of Assembly, the destruction of important property, and a constitutional deadlock that prevented the Appropriation Bill from moving forward.
2. The Supreme Court’s Opinion and Ineffective Mediation
He pointed out that even the Supreme Court had declared that Rivers State at the time had no government. His and other leaders’ several attempts at intervention failed because both sides remained inflexible and unyielding.
3. Using the Powers of the Constitution
According to Tinubu, it was necessary to declare a state of emergency and suspend the governor, deputy governor, and members of the state assembly for six months by using Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution.
