The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has stated that it is not shocked that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has kept Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, in his cabinet despite shocking disclosures that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) have both rejected the credentials he submitted to be appointed.
In a statement released Monday in Abuja by Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, its National Publicity Secretary, the party said the Tinubu administration’s silence demonstrated its “ample tolerance for corruption of all kinds.”
Putting a guy “tainted with dubious credentials” at the head of such a crucial ministry, according to the ADC, was a huge disservice to the nation, which is home to many capable and respectable persons.
“The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is not surprised that Mr. Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, is still in office despite growing evidence and public outcry after being accused and later acknowledging that the certificates he presented were not issued by the relevant institutions and may have been forged.”
The party claimed that this was not a unique incident and charged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was fostering a culture of dishonesty and moral lapses.
“Notably, this is not a unique instance. Scandals involving certificates and dubious academic assertions made by senior officials have long plagued the APC government. Indeed, these frequent scandals and the lingering smell of certificate fabrication reveal a party that is blatantly tolerant of dishonesty and obviously unconcerned with fundamental ethical principles,” the party stated.
Nnaji himself acknowledged that UNN never awarded him a degree certificate, according to court filings, and the ADC cited reliable reports attesting to the fact that both UNN and NYSC had formally rejected the certifications he produced.
A moral question was raised by the opposition party regarding the president’s decision to retain the minister in office in spite of the scandal.
At this point, the question that every Nigerian has is straightforward: why is the Tinubu administration continuing to hold the minister in office if he is not honorable enough to step down? The APC argued that by doing nothing, the Tinubu administration and the party are mocking their claims to be fighting corruption and acknowledging their involvement in such dishonest behavior at the top levels of their government.
The ADC asserts that when a government’s appointees are corrupted by fraud and forgeries, it cannot be considered credible.
According to the ADC, the integrity of the individuals chosen or appointed to lead a government is the first step towards establishing its legitimacy. It said, “Nigerians cannot be expected to trust a government that is made up of individuals who have lied under oath about their qualifications.”
The party bemoaned the fact that the head of the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation, a strategic organization designed to promote research and innovation, has tarnished the organization with dubious credentials.
In this specific case, the questionable beliefs of the individual President Tinubu has deemed qualified to lead the ministry—whose mission is to promote innovation, research, and the expansion of knowledge—have tarnished the ministry. This is extremely regrettable, but it also shows how lack of honesty and knowledge gain are valued by this APC government, the statement stated.
The ADC emphasized that although Nigeria is endowed with many bright minds who have demonstrated their ability and diligence without doubt, the APC government still rewards incompetence and dishonesty.
“Our nation is endowed with bright minds who have earned their position via diligence, moral character, and greatness. They are qualified and skilled in every area of human endeavor, both domestically and internationally. It stated that the APC government could only consider a guy whose claim to higher education has now been called into question for appointment to such a crucial ministry, or any ministry at all.
The ADC warned that certificate forgery is a crime that bears the full force of the law and demanded that Minister Nnaji be suspended immediately pending an independent investigation.
In order to allow for a thorough impartial investigation, the ADC demands that Minister Nnaji be suspended immediately. In addition to being terminated with shame if proven guilty, he should be fully prosecuted for perjury and forgery. Forging a certificate is a crime, not a mistake made by a clerk. The full force of the law must be applied if it is proven. The statement cautioned, “The longer the Tinubu government puts off taking action, the more obvious it is that honesty and responsibility are not relevant to its leadership consideration.”
