Nigerians residing in Brazil have expressed concern over what they perceive to be a false promise of direct flights between São Paulo and Lagos.
They alleged that Nigerian airline Air Peace and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration had promised direct flights, leaving them stuck and in financial misery.
The irate Nigerians told Sahara Reporters that the widely reported Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Nigerian government and Brazil in August 2025 raised high expectations among the Nigerian community in South America, especially regarding the promise of an Air Peace-operated direct flight route from Lagos to São Paulo.
But nothing has happened several months after the deal was hailed by government officials and extensively reported in the media.
The aforementioned journal was informed by a Nigerian living in Brazil that the whole arrangement was dishonest from the start.
“The Memorandum of Understanding that the Tinubu administration signed with Brazil in August is a huge fraud, and they have only given us Nigerians who live there false optimism. All of it was false.
Specifically, the fact that Air Peace operates direct flights between Sao Paulo and Lagos. Nigerians were paying up to $1,500 to travel from Nigeria to Brazil prior to their arrival to trick us. This was due to the lack of a direct flight. Every time we travel to Brazil, we pass through Addis Ababa, South Africa, and Europe.
“When he brought his flight that time, the Air Peace Chairman gave us false hope.” The Nigerian resident in Brazil stated, “He promised us that the flight would start properly in November 2025 and that he would reduce the flight price by 50% because it is a direct flight of about 6 to 7 hours.”
The source claims that many Nigerians in Brazil postponed their vacation plans after receiving guarantees from the airline and government officials, while others started getting ready for business trips to Nigeria since they thought cheaper, faster direct flights would soon be available.
Many of us trusted them, which prompted us to make advance travel plans. Since we do a lot of business in Nigeria, we believed the government was telling the truth, according to the source.

Every government arrives with the delusion that it will provide us with direct flights to Nigeria. However, the fact that Tinubu’s administration praised it so much is what made this one so concerning, according to another source.
