Stephen Chukwuma, the parish priest of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Boji-Boji Agbor, Ika North Local Government Area, Delta State, passed away following a collapse during his homily during the New Year’s Eve Mass.

On Wednesday night, the 63-year-old preacher slumped on the altar, shocking and upsetting the attendees.

In a formal announcement signed by its director of communications, Charles Uganwa, the Catholic Diocese of Issele-Uku acknowledged the death.

When Chukwuma passed away, he was the diocese’s Regional Vicar for the Agbor Region.

His unexpected death has shocked the Catholic community in Delta State and abroad, particularly the parishioners who were there when the awful event occurred during the Mass.

The sudden end of the ceremony is said to have left many worshippers traumatized.

The late priest was from Delta State’s Ika North East Local Government Area, namely Akumazi-Umuocha.

He was born in Agbor on June 5, 1962, and started his religious career at a young age as an altar server at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.

He went to Ika Grammar School in Agbor and Ngala Primary School before enrolling in the seminary in 1982.

He studied theology at Saints Peter and Paul Major Seminary, where he finished his schooling in 1990, after completing a Spiritual Year at St. Paul’s Missionary Seminary.

In the same year, Anthony Gbuji ordained him for the Issele-Uku Catholic Diocese.

St. Brigid’s Catholic Church in Asaba, All Saints Catholic Church in Onicha-Ugbo, and St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Ubulu-Uku were among the parishes in Delta State where Rev. Fr. Chukwuma was employed.

As the dean of the St. John of the Cross Spiritual Year Campus in Ekpoma and the rector of St. Felix Minor Seminary in Ejeme-Aniogor, he also had important leadership roles in the Church.
